First Mention
Versailles was first mentioned sometime this year in the first deeds of the Saint-Pere abbaye at Chartres with one of the signers, Hugo de Versailles.

Palace of Versailles
Palace of Versailles was first thought of in 1038 and to this day tourists are able to enjoy the beauty of the palance, its gardnes, and its history. Please enjoy this timeline for it has current pictures that my husband and I took while we visited the Palace of Versailles during our honeymoon and information about its creation. -
Hunting Lodge
Louis XIII bought the land from the Archbishop of Paris. At this time the Palace of Versailles was considered a hunting lodge. It was made of brick, stone and had a slate roof.

Chateau
During this year, the king hired Jacques Lemercier for development of the chateau. The walls are current day's walls of the exterior facade overlooking the Marble Court.

Louis XIV First Visit
Sometime during this year Louis XIV visited his dad's hunting lodge.

In Love
Somtime this year Louis XIV fell in love with Versailles after many visits. He hired Andre Le Notre with the design and layout of the gardens of Versailles.

The First Painter of the King produced drawings for a large number of statues and fountains. Jules Hardouin-Mansart drew up plans and built the Orangerie.

Upgrades
During this year, Louis XIV enlarged the castle with the help and work from Louis Le Vau. They transformed the hunting lodge into Europe's premiere palace.

Home For The Royal Family
The palace became the home for the Royal Family during this year. Also, King Louis XIV transfered the royal power from Paris to the palace. This weakened the aristocrats’ strength and increased his own authority.

King's apartments

Royal Chapel

First Aeronautical Experiment
King Louis XVI got to be present for Etienne de Montgolfier's experiment that involved a baloon filled with hydrogen that carried animals in a gondola over the rooftops of Versailles.

Napoleon's Apartment
During this year, Napoleon had an apartment in the Palace of Versailles. He had it created in the Grand Trianon.

Versailles To a Different Use
Louis-Philippe decided to put Versailles to a different use during this year. He took away the royal status and turned the Chateau into a museum. -
Museum Was Created
Per Louis-Philippe's request, the Chateau was finally a museum during this year. It has more than 6,000 paintings and 3,000 sculptures, and the main source of French history.

Prussian Troops Arrival
The first Prussian troops arrived in Versailles two months after France declared war on Prussia.

Northern Germany Parliament Arrival
The Parliament of Northern Germany arrived at the Palace of Versailles on this day. This was to request the king of Prussia to become Emperor of Germany.

Tourists Allowed
This picture was taken when my husband and I visited the Palace of Versailles the last day of our honeymoon. There was a large line about an hour before the doors open to begin exploring. If you are in France, it is a place to go visit and explore. It will take you all day because there is so much information and land.
