  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    Two waves from Japan suddenly attacked the military station in Pearl Harbor. They used aircrafts and naval forces to attack American ships docked at Pearl Harbor.Around 2,500 sailors were killed. The ship that suffered the most casualties was the USS Arizona. The Japanese were seeking for naval power in the Pacific ocean. America has declared war on Japan, and vowed to win.
  • Bataan and Corregidor

    Bataan and Corregidor
    Japan raided Bataan in 1941. MacArthur’s troops failed to defend its peninsula. They were then marched off into prison camps. The Japanese advanced further. When they met the American troops, the Japanese were victorious, and made the American troops march of to prison camps. With a last rally, the American troops tried to defend Corregidor, but were unsuccessful. When they surrendered, they had to go on the infamous ‘death march’. About 9300 Americans and 45,000 died on this march.

  • Doolittle Raid

    Doolittle Raid
    After the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States had to retaliate in some way against the Japanese. President Roosavelt ordered an attack on the island of Tokyo. Led by Lieutenant colonel James H. Doolittle an air raid was set upon the isaland of Tokyo. 16 B-25 fighter planes left San Francisco enroute to Japan. Once reached Japan, the americans planes, 13 planes attacked the flight deck. 3 attacked mainland. Overall about 400 japanese dead or injured and a nummber of affected machenery.

    The Battle of Coral Sea
    As the Japanese planned an attack on Port Moresby in New Guinea on the Coral Sea, two American aircraft carriers were dispatched to stop them. The Battle of Coral sea was a battle between aircraft carriers as both sent their planes to fight. It was the first naval battle in history where enemy ships could not see each other. Both sides destroyed each other until they fought to a draw and withdrew.

    Battle of Midway
    During the battle of Midway, the Japanese sent a fleet to Midway, the edge of the American outposts, with the intent that Americans would be guarding Hawaii. However, through intercepted codes, the Americans learned the true target and fought back with aircraft carriers, using their aircraft to destroy the four Japanese aircraft carriers, the Akagi, the Kaga, the Hiryu, and the Soryu, in minutes. The Americans lost the Yorktown. The Japanese Combined Fleet was crushed.

    Guadalcanal Campaign
    A battle fought on and around the island of Guadalcanal. This was the first ofensive movement by the allied forces. The intention was to deny the japanese trade routes to US, New Zealand, and Austalia. Alied forces captured Florida. Battle was over Henderson Airfeild. Lasted 6 months and 2 days. only 7,000 US casualties to the 31,000 Japanese.
  • Battle of Peleliu

    Battle of Peleliu
    After securing many islands, the American forces decided that the island of Peleliu would complete their right flank and give them an advantage in the Pacific theater. A charge was made on Peleliu as the Americans invaded the island. The Marines battled through the island, and after weeks of fighting to secure the island, the Japanese Colonel Nakagawa committed suicide. The Americans had gained the island. Of the 1st Marine Division, 1,252 killed, and 5,274 were wounded or missing.
