Battle of Midway
The Batle of Midway was a major fight fought in the air. The USA ended up beating the Japanese in a very decisive manner. Japan sought out to deter the Americans with a large defeat and diminishing air force numbers in the Pacific therefore allowing them to gain an advantage. It was a key turning point as it set the Japanese air force very far back in their efforts. -
Guadalcanal Campaign
Another Japanese defeat. The Americans came and took over the Guadacanal with huge numbers compared to the Japanese. After months of fighting the Japanese again found themselves defeated. It was a big turning point because the Japanese had a large base on the island and lost many people throughout the months of fighting. -
Island Hopping
The Allied forces used the Island hopping technique or strategy in the South Pacific. The Allies slowly took over islands from the outside in coming ever closer to Japan on the way. The major campaign took place in the beginning of 1943. It allowed the Allies to set up new bases and bring supplies and troops into the area in a easier and sager manner. This strategy was ultimately the downfall of the Japanese as they had no answer to the Americans. -
Allies invade Philippines
The Allies invade the Pilippines as it had been taken over by the Japanese. They needed to take back the Pilippines it was one of Japan's largest bases. -
US forces capture the Marshall Islands. British forces make advances on Burma.
Invaded and occupied the islands, destroying or isolating japanese garrisons. The US added the islands to the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, along with several other island groups in the South Sea. The fight for Burma was important as the Burma Road was the ain supply route avalible to Chinese Nationalists. -
Japanese begin last offensive in China
Gained little for the Japanese but it did hurt Chinese - American relations. It cause the US to lose hope for the Chinese Army and thus redirected its resources back to the island hopping tactics.
