Our Understanding of the Universe

  • Period: 100 to 170

    Ptolemy

Ptolemy's theory of the universe is that the Earth is in centre of the galaxy, and all the planets and the sun orbits around it.
  • Period: Feb 19, 1473 to May 24, 1543

    Copernicus

It positioned the Sun near the center of the Universe, motionless, with Earth and the other planets rotating around it in circular paths modified by epicycles and at uniform speeds.
  • Period: Feb 15, 1564 to

    Galileo

Galileo made a number of observations that finally helped convince people that the Sun-centered solar system model, as proposed by Copernicus, was correct. We'll first consider some philosophically important observations and then the ones that proved Venus, at least, goes around the Sun and not around Earth.
  • Period: Dec 27, 1571 to

    Kepler

Kepler's theory and belief was that the Sun was/is in the center of the Universe. He expanded his theory when he researched about the orbit of the planets, and began realising the orbit of the planets were not circular, but ellipse, or a flattened circle. He found that Mars ellipictal matched perfectly, and the other planets followed.
  • Kepler's Death

  • Period: to

    Newton

Newton's many discoveries included how the universe is held together through his theory of gravitation, secrets of light and colour and calculus.
