First DNA Discovered
A Russian scientist first discovered true DNA in 1935 which led to many advances. First of all, scientist were able to more understand evolution and genetics because DNA was discovered. It also would bring up the ideas of genetic engineering later on with other bacteria and eventually humans and food. Because of this discovery, we have invented and created so many new tools that change our life today. One of the worst effects it has on our life is the genetic engineering of food. -
GMO Patent Signed
The first GMO patent was signed in 1980 by the Supreme Court to allow an engineer to put the organism to use. This specific type of organism was able to clean up oil, so it could help if there was ever a spill. This was one of the first GMO's that was used on a non-food subject. This just shows how something that can be used on food, can also be used to break down oil and other substances. They can be very helpful, but the health risk that people put themselves in isn't worth it. -
FDA approves the first GMO
Humulin, which is produced by genetically engineered E. coli bacteria, appears on the market. Humulin is a type of man made hormone that lowers the level of sugar in the bloodstream. It's slightly different from other types of insulin like Humulin N, which is used to treat diabetes. This was one of the first genetically modified organisms and it sparked the ideas of others. These other people thought of different ways they could use these chemicals to help with something else in the world. -
GMO's in Stores
The FDA approves of the flavr savr tomatoes which are to be sold on shelves. These tomatoes have a chemical which makes for delayed ripening so it can remain on the shelf for a longer time. Sometimes the chemicals can even make the tomato look bigger so more people will want to buy it. This wasn't good because we were starting to trick people into eating something they might not even want. Soon after the flavr savr came out, many other vegetables and fruits received the same treatment. -
Europe Takes Control
In Europe, all GMO products are required to have labels including dog food. Europe was the first place where sellers of GMO's had to put a label saying the food had chemicals. These sellers lost many of their customers because they didn't want to be putting that stuff into their bodies. The other foods without labels started to get more people buying, even if they were a little more expensive. By making labels mandatory, they had changed the whole market of food in the country. -
GMO Population Rises
Over 100 million acres around the world are now GMO crops and nobody seems to realize how bad they actually are. More and more crops every day are being sprayed with poisonous chemicals. People but these crops every day and never think to themselves if the vegetables are unhealthy for them. They buy them and think they are eating healthy because it's a vegetable. The fact that more crops are being genetically engineered than ones that are not should be frightening to everyone. -
Toxins in Humans
Scientists that research BT toxins and gmo's find that the chemicals can get into the bloodstream of pregnant women and affect the fetuses. This can cause problems when the baby is born as they could have a certain type of disease. Ever since GMO's were created, scientists have found that more and more kids are getting disabilities. The percentage of kids has skyrocketed since the 1980s, and will continue to if nothing is done. Adults just need to realize that what they are eating affects them. -
GMO Fraud
Throughout the U.S. there are many stores and people who are selling GMO's without people even knowing. This was a case with a Whole Foods store. They are making deceptive advertisements to make people think they don't sell genetically modified food. The statement is right on front of the store and it says, "Nothing Artificial Ever." This was news that made people actually start reading the label in the store and everywhere else. Less people were now buying less GMO food because the labels. -
U.S. Labeling
In 2014, many states passed a law that requires genetically modified food to be labeled. This was caused by many American protesters who wanted to know what was in their food. This protest was like any other protest. It could be related to protests of the Vietnam war when they were protesting against the war. In this case, people are protesting to have to put labels for GMO's on food. People like the makers of the food were protest against the labels because they were afraid of losing money. -
Organic Food Costs Rise
In recent years, organic food prices have been going up at a slow pace, but enough to make a big difference. The amount of organic feed has also been in short supply many times since 2012. This means that farmers and others have to work harder to get the products they can sell. Some organic products prices have been decreasing like coffee, canned beans, and spinach. Back in 2004, spinach used to cost 60 percent more than it does today, which is a very significant drop.
