Miramichi Fire
Des: This fire started in Canada, but it was still reaching well into Maine when it finally stopped burning.
Import: The Miramichi Fire burned around 3 million acres of US and Canadian land. "This devistating fire killed 167 people," according tot he titled article. This is important bc probably took so many acres to burn out because of the year it happened, it would've been stopped a lot sooner if it had happened in 2015 where we have to technology to see what the weather will effect the fires. -
The Great Fires of 1871
Des: Four of worst fires in America's history all happened within the same week of each other in 1871.
Import: Accoring to MNN's "Worst Wildfires in US History," The Great Chicago Fire, which destroyed about a third of the city's valuation at the time and left more than 100,000 residents homeless, stole the headlines. that's not the only fire either, the great Michigan, Peshtigo, Holland, and Manistee Fires also killed many and placed other on the streets as it ripped through the cities -
Great Fire of 1910
Des: this "Great Fire" is the biggest fire in US's recorded history.
Import: According to MNN, "It burned more than 3 million acres in Idaho, Montana and Washington — in all, a total area roughly the size of Connecticut. There were 87 fatalities from the fire and 78 of those were firefighters." The fatalities could have been a lot worse considering the size of the fire. Many acres were scorched, but with only 87 dead, I feel like America got lucky. -
Cloquet Fire
Des: One of the biggest fries to ever rip through Minnesota.
Import: According to the titled article, "The worst natural disaster in Minnesota history, the Cloquet Fire of 1918, claimed nearly 500 lives in a single day." Our country has gone through many devastating fires, but this one seemed to cost a lot more, not only in lives, but in money as well. According to MNN it cost "$75 million" to repair the losses and devastation. -
Washington Wildfires
Des: Washington wildfires of 2015 have become "Washington's largest fires since 1997," according to USA Today.
Import: This is important because many wildfires have happened in different centuries and we have better technology revolving around the weather and predicting what it may do. With this technology you would think that it wouldn't have been as devistating, but you also can't control the weather so these fires must have been very hard to control since they could hardly control the loss.
