The history of English Literature

  • Period: 460 to 1066

    Old English (Anglo Saxon) Period

    At the very beginning, it all started with the germanic traditions of the Anglo-Saxon settlers. The most iconic and remarkable poem by this time was " Beowulf"
  • Period: 1066 to 1500

    Middle English Period

    The addition of French vocabulary due to the Norman conquest. This led to a competition between Germanic and French influences in English literature

    The Renaissance

    Thanks to the invention of the printing press, artists all over England decided to show their cultural and artistic works to the world. During this period, well-known Shakespeare was born and developed his greatest works.

    This period is divided into three important periods; " The restoration, Augustan and Age of Johnson"
