    German mechain Karl Heinrich Klingert made a device the first device to be called a "diving suit". It was made with a jacket, trousers, metal helmet with a porthole, and a metal front. The jacket and trousers were made out of waterproof leather. This helped with navigation and exploring underwater better.

    Darwin aboard the H.M.S Beagle
    Charles Darwin leaves England on the H.M.S Beagle to start his expedition. His goal is to do a survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. He studies the plants and animals at each new location. From this is helps scientific research for today and how differents plants and animals evolve in different locations.

    On, December 21, 1872 the H.M.S Challenger begins its four year trip around the world leaving from Portsmouth, England. This voyage allowed for scientists to test different temperature where the different places they went. They also tested the water from the different places. This helped with navigation and lead to scientific research throughout the four years..

    Modern Electric Submarine
    the French Navy launched the Gymnote. The Gymnote is the first electric powered also fully functional military submarine. it was powered by a 204 cell battery. This helped the military a lot it had over 2,000 successful dives before it was scrapped.

    In 1903 the Scripps Institution of Oceanography was founded. this was one of the first Oceanography schools. This leaded the way for more studies about the ocean and the sea life which helped out a lot.

    Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the bottom of the challenger. It was deep in the Mariana Trench. Descending to a depth of 10,740 m or 35,236 ft. From this they were able to observe fish and other sea organisms.

    The National Oceanographic Partnership Program was founded in 2000. Its dedicated to develop an integrated ocean observing system. This helps with research and observation of the ocean and the organism that live in it.

    Kathryn Sullivan and Vanessa O'Brien complete their mission. The mission was to become the first woman to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep at 10,925m or 35,843 ft. This help with deep sea navigation and scientific research.
