Battle at Duck Lake
The North West Mounted Police went from Fort Carlton to pick up food and weapons stored at Duck Lake. They found the road blocked by Métis 5 km from the lake. The Métis saw the NWMP and killed many of them. 10 NWMP died and 11 were injured in the 40 minute battle. 4 Métis and 1 Aboriginal died, the NWMP left Fort Carlton and went to Prince Albert, a rebellion began in the North-West.
Consequences:
Métis: Killed a lot of the NWMP and had more people than the NWMP.
Government: Were outnumbered. -
Métis Gained Supplies
The defeat of the NWMP at Duck Lake spread. The Métis were encouraged by this and some Aboriginal people broke into the Hudson’s Bay Company store in Battleford and took some supplies.Chief Crowfoot and a lot of the Aboriginal groups on the prairies did not want to be involved in these battles.

Battle at Fish Creek
Dumont wants to attack by surprise. On the other hand, Riel wants to wait. He says that he has prayed about it and god told him that they would win. However Dumont’s strategy was obeyed.
Consequences:
Métis- outnumbered.
Government-were going to get attacked by surprise. -
Battle at Cut knife Hill
Otter had a special weapon called the gatling gun, which is basically an early machine gun. Poundmaker possessed old guns but they had great aim. The british was firing down with their gatling gun but made no harm to the Crees. The Cree were doing more harm so the british decided to pull out of battleford.
Consequences:
Métis- will not get help.
Government-got lots of crees injured. -
Battle at Batoche
Northcote came too early and the Métis found out their plan and set a trap, they stretched a steel wire across the river, and when the Northcote would hit the wire, the whistle would not work anymore.The Métis threw stones and nails because they were out of bullets.The Métis lose the battle.

Came too early for the battle, and their plan was exposed to the Métis. -
Louis Riel Surrenders
Riel wrote a letter to Middleton saying that he could surrender himself if Middleton lets the Métis free. Dumont tried to convince Riel to go with him to the USA, but Riel did not want to go. Dumont slips through Middleton’s military patrols and goes to the USA.

Riel was getting the Métis closer to being free.

Dumont enters the USA with Middleton’s military patrols. -
Big Bear Surrenders
Big Bear was running out of food and supplies so on July 2 1885 Big Bear surrenders to North West Mounted Police. Now the Northwest Rebellion is over since he was a Métis chief. The Northwest Rebellion took exactly 100 days.

Louis Riel is on Trial
Lawyers were hired to defend Riel. Their only hope was to plead as his jury took 1h and 20 minutes. Unfortunately he was then declared guilty.

Louis Riel is Executed
If Macdonald did not hang Riel, Ontario would be very angry and the Conservatives would lose votes in the next election, but if he is punished, then Quebec would be angry with the Conservative Party. Macdonald chose to take his chances with losing support from Quebec, “Riel shall hang,” he said. In French-speaking Canada, flags flew halfway.
