in the middle of the night, when Ellen was staying with the Johansen's, the Nazis came and demaned to know if Ellen was the Rosen's daughter. Luckily, Annemarie's father,had quick thinking and showed a picture of their late daughter, as a baby, with dark curls just as Ellen has. This was enough for the Germans to accept that Ellen was their daughter, even though she wasn't.

Once the Germans invaded, there was a loss of a lot of everyday things. People could no longer have cream,coffee, butter, cigarettes, sugar and many other things.

Many Jewish people were sent to ghettos or captured and sent to concentration camps where they were put to work or killed.

Peter and LIse were part of the Resistance. They helped Jews cross the border to Sweden where the Nazis had not invaded, and not planned to.

One time when Annemarie and Ellen were racing on the way home from school, they were stopped by a German Soilder. He told them not run anymore on the sidewalks.

The Tivoli Gardens was a favorite place to go for the Danes. It provide fun, laughter and food until the Nazis burned part of it and said that no one could go there. Annemarie remembers the fireworks that the Tivoli Gardens had as a night show.

Many people, non-Jews and Jews were part of the Resistance. this was a secret organization to help Jewish people escape from the harmful clutches of the Nazis.

Peter, late Lise's former fiance, is part of the Resistance. He is telling the Johansen's about the Jews being relocated so they can help the Rosens. To protect them, Ellen must stay with the Johansen's and Ellen's parents go to a secret place.

Mrs. Hirsch, the owner of a button shop, and her family, were relocated because they were Jewish. this happened to many people just because they were Jewish.

Uncle Henrik and Annemarie's mother made up a lie about a Great Aunt Birte that has passed away.

The reason that Annemarie's mother and Uncle Henrik lied is because they were really helping a bunch of Jewish people cross the border to Sweden. In Great Aunt Birte's "coffin", there were really warm clothes for the Jews. The only way to Sweden from Denmark was by boat so they needed the warm clothes.

At Uncle Henrik's house you can look across the waterand see the country of Sweden. Annemarie said to Ellen, "I wonder if two girls over in Sweden are looking in Denmark!"

Annemarie's father has to use code wordsto communicate to people about Ellen so that the Nazis don't now that Ellen isn't their daughter she belongs to the Jewish Rosens.For example, over the phone he referred to her as a "cigarette" to Henrik, Annemarie's uncle. Annemarie's mother, Ellen, Kirsti and Annemarie, were going to Henrik's house to smuggle the
Rosens to Sweden. -
The King of Denmark always rode his horse in the streets of Denmark waving to his people.

When Annemarie's mother was helping people get to Uncle Henrik's boat she tripped and sprained her ankle on the way back.
She was only supposed to be gone an hour but she was gone all night. -
Now that Ellen is in safe Sweden, she has left her necklace behind. Annemarie says," I will wear this Star of David until the day Ellen returns from Sweden."
