    Tariff of 1828
    This tariff targeted goods being imported into the United States. It raised prices on goods as much as 50%, and it was to reduce the competition between foreign made goods and American made goods and protect industrialization in the North.

    South Carolina Exposistion and Protest
    This exposistion and protest was a protest in response to the Tariff of 1828. It basically said that the states have the right to not follow the laws put in place by the national government.
  • Tariff of 1832

    Tariff of 1832
    The Tariff of 1832 was put in place to make a compromise of those who opposed the Tariff of 1828. It brought down the price raise to 35% from 50%, but South Carolina was still not happy with this as they did not like any price increase on goods at all.

    Ordinance of Nullification
    The Ordinacne of Nullification made it to where the previously instated tariffs were null and void within South Carolina. This was an issue because it was a state overriding the law at the national level, which had been refuted in the past.

    Jackson Proclamation Against Ordinance of Nullification
    Jackson made a response to the Ordinance of Nullfication saying that South Carolina had to right to say that national laws do not apply to them, and that he would do whatever it takes to enforced the laws in South Carolina.

    Hayne’s Counter Proclamation said that if a state finds themselves being oppressed by a law the national government makes, they are able to make it null and void.

    The Force Act made it to where the government is allowed to use martial force against any state that refuses to follow the tariffs in place.

    After the Force Act was put in place, South Carolina repealed the Ordinance of Nullification with a compromise that was made by Henry Clay.
