  • Tariff of 1824

    Tariff of 1824
    A protective tariff in the United States that was designed to protect the American Industry from the British goods that were cheaper. Mostly iron, wood and cotton products. Planned to make sure that Americans would buy American made goods instead of exports from Britain. Creates anger is the south as it raises taxes.
  • Tariff of 1828

    Tariff of 1828
    A protective tariff that was put in place to protect the industries of the northern United States. Often referred to as the "Tariff of Abominations" in the south because it raises taxes drastically, created anger and rumors of the south seceding.
  • The South Carolina Exposition.

    The South Carolina Exposition.
    John C. Calhoun, the vice president at the time, anonymously writes the South Carolina Exposition. South Carolina feels that the government was being biased toward the North, giving them significant advantages over the south. South Carolina feels that the government is not imposing these taxes for revenue but instead the good of the government.

    Tariff of 1832
    Written by former president John Quincy Adams, reduced the effects of the Tariff of 1828 to ease the anger in the south. Most felt that this was still unsatisfactory, creating the Nullification Crisis.
  • South Carolina Nullification

    South Carolina Nullification
    South Carolina strongly opposed the tariffs that had been put in place previously. They refused to pay them, and stated that if Andrew Jackson were to use force to make them pay, they would secede from the United States.

    Jackson's Proclamation Against Nullification
    Andrew Jackson was preparing to send troops into South Carolina if they did not pay off the tariffs. He wanted to pass the Force Bill, which gave him the privilege of military action to enforce that we would pay the tariffs.

    Haynes claims that if a state is being oppressed by a law, they are allowed to express that its unconstitutional and void. Andrew Jackson readied troops for South Carolina. South Carolina got prepared for war, because they felt that the tariffs were unconstitutional.
  • Force Bill

    The Force Bill let Andrew Jackson use military force to collect duties on Tariffs. South Carolina disagreed with these force bills, obviously calling them out as null and void.
  • Clay's Compromise

    Clay's Compromise
    A mature response to the Force Bill. That responded to previous tariffs and stopped the conflict between the US and southern states. South Carolina was very pleased with this compromise, as it lowered the extreme state taxes.
  • South Carolina Repeal of Nullification

    South Carolina Repeal of Nullification
    As a result of Clay's Compromise, South Carolina lowered their tariff rates, also repealing their nullification. This marked the end of the Nullification Crisis. But the the south still was divided with the north, and a civil war was evident to break out eventually
