    Tariff of 1828
    Also known as the Tariff of Abomination. Manufactured goods’ prices were raised up to 50%. The goods most imported from states of New England were the targets of these tariffs. These tariffs were supposed to protect businesses and farming. However, the southern states were upset because of how poor their agriculture became.
  • South Carolina Nullification

    South Carolina Nullification
    The convention put together by the legislature adopted the Ordinance of Nullification on November 24th, 1832. It made the tariffs null in South Carolina. It also would no longer allow the appeal of ordinances.
  • Jackson’s Proclamation

    Jackson’s Proclamation
    Jackson sent naval vessels to Charleston South Carolina, and he created a proclamation against the nullification of tariffs. He thought the nullification was unconstitutional. "Are unauthorized by the constitution of the United States, and violate the true meaning and intent thereof and are null, void, and no law, nor binding upon this State."

    Force Bill
    This bill's purpose was to grant the president more power so they could collect taxes, tariffs, import duties, and the use of military. Jackson wanted to use this power to force the states who wouldn’t pay tax laws.

    South Carolina’s Repeal
    South Carolina finally decided to repealEd the nullification they had made. However, they also nullified the force bill. This was also supposed to be a compromise between Jackson and South Carolina.
