Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of Abominations was Passed

    Doing this put a import tax on manufactured goods. It was instituted to safeguard new industrial and manufacturing centers in New England, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. It was significant because even though it helped the New England side with the industry's it hurt the south by making imported goods more expensive and they lost access to European markets a big part of the agricultural farming in the south.

    This was a letter sent by President Jackson to the people of South Carolina telling them the problems that will occur by following the Ordinance of Nullification.
  • Compromise Tariff Act of 1833

    This was the Act that would lower the high tariffs and taxes on many imported goods at the time to make South Carolina happy and prevent them from leaving the Union while still helping the industrys of New England.
