Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of 1828

    This was a heavy tax placed upon imported goods such as wool, iron, and clothing this was done to promote Manufacturing of goods made in the United states as well as to stop the imports of cheaply made products from outside countries. As a result of this tariff Southerners were heated as they disliked this tax on the other hand northerners loved it since it made them money and it grew the industry and demand for these objects.

    This was a document written by John C. Calhoun which protested against the tariff of 1828 in the document Calhoun stated that the tariff of 1828 was unconstitutional and that the states had the power to go against this law.

    This tariff was set in place in order to reduce the problems that the tariff of 1832 brought up such as lowering the tariff a little as a result the southerners were still unhappy with this tariff.

    The Ordinance of Nullification was a law passed by south Carolina which deemed both the tariff of 1828 and 1832 were unconstitutional. As a result of this South Carolina raised their military force which would later result in the Force Bill.

    This was a proclamation made by Andrew Jackson which was directly to the people of South Carolina that stated that South Carolina did not have the power to nullify a federal law and if they did Jackson would be able to use military force on the states if needed.
  • Force Bill

    This was a bill passed by congress which allowed Andrew Jackson to use any military force that is needed to be used against South Carolina because of their refusal to follow the federal laws.
  • Compromise Tariff

    This was a tariff that was imposed by Henry Clay, this made 20 percent of the tariffs to be reduced down by 10 percent every two years. The creation of this was in order to end the nullification crisis by lowering the tariffs.
