  • The Tariff of Abominations

    Also known as the Tariff of 1828, the Tariff of Abominations protected new industrial centers in the North, but increased prices on manufactured goods in the South. This led to South Carolina threatening to secede from the United States.
  • The Hayne-Webster Debates

    This debate took place between Robert Y. Hayne and Danial Webster over the states' rights versus federal law. Hayne sided with the states, saying they ahd the right to over rule a Constitutional law, but Webster sided with teh Constitution, saying that the federal law was the supreme law of the land.
  • Ordinance of Nullification

    The state of South Carolina passed this ordinace, declaring the Tariff of 1828 null and void within state borders.
  • Jacksons's Proclamation

    Jackson delivered a proclamation to the people of South Carolina warning them of the consequences they would face if they continued on their path of "treason".
  • The Force Act

    This was a bill passed by Congress and signed by Jackson,allowing Jackson to use military force against any states resisting tthe Tariff of 1828 and the Compromise Tariff Act of 1833.
  • The Compromise Tariff Act of 1833

    This bill was passed by Congress in order to reduce the economic pressure and hardships put on the South, but it did not address the conflict of states' rights versus federal law.
