The Bubonic Plague
The Bubonic Plague or Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in history. It killed off over half of Norway's population. This Plague did not only affect Norway, but also other parts of Europe such as Spain and Rome. The cause of the plague was most likely the Oriental Rat Flea. -

Shared Monarch
Norway, Sweden, and Denmark agree to share a monarch under the Kalmar Union. The Kalmar Union brought the scandinavian nations together. The Countries stayed legally separate, but their domestic and foreign policies were directed by the same monarch. This lasts until Sweden becomes independent in 1523. -

Norway is officially proclaimed a Danish province
Norway became a province of Denmark. This occurred after the two regions had been in a personal union since 1524. After it became a part of Denmark, Norway still made its own laws and had separate institutions. Norway did not re-establish it's kingdom until 1660. The reason for re-establishment was because of the introduction of absolutism. -
Denmark gives Norway up to Sweden
Denmark gave Norway to Sweden and the Sweden king took them over. Norwegians adopted a constitution to elect their own king even though they were ruled under a Swedish one. There was a fourteen day war that led to the acceptance of Sweden's King. The new Norwegian constitution was kept. -
Nobel Peace Prize

The Peace, Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and Medicine prizes are awarded yearly for people who made outstanding contributions in that particular field. The Peace prize is the only of the five that is awarded in Norway by the five member, Norwegian Nobel Committee that was appointed by the parliament of Norway. It is awarded every year on December 10th at the Oslo City Hall. -
Norway proclaims independence
Norway breaks away from Sweden and Prince Carl of Denmark becomes King. This is the first time since 1397 Norway has their own king. The union with Sweden was a loose and personal one. Before they broke apart there was fear of war between the two nations. After they broke up Norway had their own independent constitutional monarchy. -
German Invasion
German forces invade Norway which is a neutral region during WWII. Hitler issued the attack on March 1, 1940, and called it Weserübung During this period Norway was occupied by the Wehrmacht, which is a group of armed Nazi forces.They had control by using the government of Norway as puppets while they led the country in exile in London. They occupy Norway until the end of World War Two in 1945. -
Norway joins NATO
In 1949 there were twelve countries that formed NATO or North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This is a Military alliance of many nations, and Norway was a part of the founding twelve. After experiencing the invasion of Germany in WWII, Norway wanted a way to have countries as an alliance for future wars. The person to sign Norway into the treaty was Mr Halvard M. Lange. In order to join NATO, the North Atlantic Council must meet and come to a consensus about the joining country. -
Oil found in Norwegian waters
Oil and Natural gas found in waters near Norway. It was discovered in the North Sea. This boosts the country's economy greatly, and became a major source of income. This new energy form has grown to be under close speculation due to the fear of Global Warming. The North Sea Oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, and is produced by petroleum pockets beneath the sea. -
Erik the Red leads vikings and settlers to Greenland
Eric was born in Rogaland. He gets his name from the red color of his hair and beard. In 985 Red and a large amount of colonists established two colonies in Greenland. The areas that they conquered were the only two areas that they thought were suitable to farming. During the summer the two settlements would send out hunters to look for food, and ivory from walrus, or rope from seals. -
KIng Olaf makes Christianity the major religion of Norway
When Olaf was a child his father, King Tryggvi Olafsson of Viken, was killed and his mother fled to Norway with three year old Olaf. Olaf Tryggvason was king from 955 to 100. He converted Norway from Norse to Christianity. He also built the first church in Norway. There is a statue of Olaf in the city plaza of the town Trondheim. -

The Viking Age
Vikings' >Video,</a> Seafarers look to conquer other lands. They explored Europe's seas and rivers for trading, raiding, and conquering purposes. Although their raids were often seen as violent and brutal, the historical documents suggest that they invaded in response to the violence from christians to the pagan peoples. Most of the history of this period was documented by the viking's enemy, the Icelandic Sagas.
