Northern Baroque
The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 divided the Netherlands into Catholic and Protestant areas and influenced the styles of art produced there. Prince William of Orange had united the northern Netherlands under Protestant rule and Flanders remained under Catholic control. Catholic areas focused on huge altarpieces while Protestant areas painted many still lifes, landscapes, as well as group portraits which became narrative paintings as well as status symbols. -
