    Roanoke Island (first attempt)
    Seven ships of colonists settled Roanoke under Sir Grenville (Sir Raleigh's cousin). The colonists suffered from shortages of supplies and poor relations with the Native Americans. The colonists, running low on supplies, returned to England.

    Roanoke Island (second attempt)
    The second attempt to colonize roanoke was led by John White. This attempt seemed at first to be more successful by improved relations with the Native Americans and the birth of Virginia Dare, the first child born in the New World. However three years later White returned to find the colony abandoned.

    Sir Walter Raliegh started the "lost colony" in North Carolina. When that failed colonists settled Virginia. North Carolina was later settled by colonists from Virginia. It was one of the first thirteen colonies.

    In Albemarle county colonists led by John Culpeper overthrew the government. They ran the government for two years before Culpeper was summoned to England and arrested. He was put on trial and found not guilty.

    North Carolina became a royal colony when almost all of it's proprietors sold their share of North Carolina to the king of England. North Carolina became a royal colony under King George. Under his rule the population of North Caroline increased from 30,000 to 265,000.

    William Hooper led a provincial congress seperate from royal government. The meeting in Wilimington agreed to send invitations for delegates. Counties and towns elected delegates to send to the meeting in New Bern.

    The Edenton Tea Party was a group of fifty-one woman who were protesting the Tea Act. They agreed to boycott British tea and other goods. These woman had been inspired by the Boston Tea Party in 1773.

    The Scotish-Irish of Mecklenburg County in the Mecklenburg resolves declared freedom from Bristish rule. In about a year the Declaration of Independence would allow the rest of the nation to follow. It was written by John Mcknitt Alexander and was burned in a fire that destoryed Alexander's house,

    The Halifax was a document was a resolution. It was named after the town where Provincial Congress met. It helped bring about the Constitution.
  • Battle of Guilford Courthouse

    Battle of Guilford Courthouse
    The Battle of the Guilford Courthouse was between General Cornwallis leading the British Army and General Greene leading the American army. The American army suffered heavy losses as some of the miltia retreated back to their homes. After the battle Cornwallis retreated to Willmington, North Carolina.

    The Hillsborough Convention was help in Hillsborough North Carolina. To discuss ratification of the Constitution. They were led by James Iredell.
  • Hoke vs. State

    Hoke vs. State
    The Hoke vs. state case concluded that every student should have a good teacher. It also said that every school should have a good principal. Finally all school districts should have the resources to provide an education to all students.

    The first constitution of NC was ratified in 1776. However the current one was ratified in 1971. It has 14 articles.
  • Leandro vs. NC

    Leandro vs. NC
    The Leandro case sought to provide education for poor children. Judge Howard Manning Jr. was the presiding judge. The case drew more attention to the education of the lower class students.
