Roanoke Island (First Attempt)
Captains Philip Amadas and Authur Barlowe were sent by Sir Walter Raleigh to select a site for an English Colony. After 2 months they returned to England with two native americans, samples of tobacco and potatoes, and glowing descriptions of the regions friendly inhabitants and lushness and fertility. -
Roanoke Island (Second Attempt)
A new group was led by John White. When they arrived they only found a skeleton. They gave up when they couldn't find anyone. -
Date of Founding NC as a colony
In 1653, some virginians settled in what would become North Carolina. The colony was one of the last to ratify the constitution. North Carolina was founded for plantation agriculture which included indigo, rice, and tobacco. -
Culpeper's Rebellion
An uprising against proprietary rule caused by the government to enforce the British navigation acts. The navigation acts denied the colonists a free market outside of England. -
When NC became a Royal Colony
When all of the proprietors sold their shares to King George II. When North Carolina became a royal colony the population increased. -
Wilmington Provincial Congress
William Hooper led this assembly to create a response to the Intolerable Acts. He also represented North Carolina at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Later after 2 years he signed the Declaration of Independence. -
Edenton Tea Party
Penelope Baker created an alliance of 51 women who supported the protests agains "Taxation without representation." -
Mecklenburg Resolves
North Carolina met in protest to the English attack at Lexington and concord. The resolves said that the English Kings laws were invalid because of the attacks. -

This document shapes the government of North Carolina.Since it was created there have been only 2 revisions but several amendments. -
Halifax Resolves
This resolution was adopted by the Fourth Provisional Congress and the Province of North Carolina. This resolution helped the Declaration of Independence progress go smoothly. -
Battle of Guilford Courthouse
British troops defeated and American army in Greensboro, NC. This war is known as the American Revolutionary War. -
Hillsborough Convention
North Carolina delegates met in Hillsborough to propose the ratification of the new federal constitution. The meeting took 2 weeks to come to a decision. The decision considered neither reatification or rejection. -
Hoke vs. State
The United Supreme Court could not regulate prostitution. However they did regulate interstate travel that was for purposes of prostitution. This case followed the Mann Act. -
Leandro VS. NC
In this case parents, school boards, and students from low wealth counties built a case against the Board of Education and the state of North Carolina. The case was built to provide their children with a quality education.
