American Revolution
in 1776, citizens of Colonial America declared their independence from Great Britain. This war was brought on due to colonist's discontent with high taxes, British policies, and sheer distance from England. The war would end with victory for the colonists and the creation of The United States of America. The Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney was an inventor who made it possible for cotton to be produced at a highly productive speed; with the cotton gin. The invention of the cotton gin increased cotton plantation's productivity putting more emphasis on the need to use African Americans as slave labor. This invention increased slavery in the southern U.S. as well as plantations that produced cotton in the southern portion of North America.

Industrial Revolution
During the late 1700's and the 1800's, North America (particularly british conlonies/the U.S.) were in the midst of an industrial revolution. Demography changed as people moved to urban areas to work in factories. Out of this revolution came modernization and use of machines in most products produced. The Industrial Revolution was occuring throughout the rest of the world as well.

Mexican Independence
After declaring a war of independence from Spain in 1810, citizens of Mexico fought for their freedom for over 10 years. After fighting such a long war, Mexico was left in a depression although they had gained their independence. Slowly, Mexico began building a Republican government.

Gold in California
In California, a man by the name of James Marshall claimed to have discovered gold in a river in California. As new spread young men, old men, and even families rushed to the supposed riches in California. While most struck out, it did create a new population of immigrants in California. It was because of the "Gold Rush" that cities such as San Fransisco were established.

Civil War
The Civil war was a gruesome time in America's history. Caused by the cessesion of southern slave-holding states, this war lasted four bloody years. The largest impact the Civil War had on North America was that it abolished slavery in America, and therefore as populations exploded in Western portions of North America, slavery was not spread.

Emancipation Proclamation
When Abraham Lincoln was in office, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This proclamation freed all enslaved peoples in the U.S. While African Americans still had more than a century until all rights were gained, it was the first step in equalizing the rights of African Americans in the U.S.

1st Transcontinental Railroad
For around 6 years, the Central Pacific Railroad Company and the Union Pacific Railroad Company worked to build the world's first railroad stretching across a continent. They owe the labor and success of the railroad to thousands of Chinese and Irish (as well as other) immigrant workers. These jobs working on the railroad created a huge wave of migrants to North America, who eventually settled in various areas and
changed the demography of the region.

Invention of the Light Bulb
Thomas Edison invents the first incandescent light bulb after hundreds of attempts. The invention of electric light sparked new interest in electricity, both in North America and around the world. Creating the light bulb was the first step towards the modern electric world that we live in today.

Spanish-American War
Spain and America went to war in order to settle disagreements about colonies in the Carribean and Pacific Ocean. The U.S. went on to win the war and gain many territories over seas. This lead to them becoming a world power as well as their control of the Philippines and Cuba.
