Napoleonic War in Sweden
During the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden surrendered Finland to Russia. As payment, the French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, who had been elected successor to the Swedish throne in 1810, succeeded in obtaining Norway, which was forced into a union with Sweden in 1814. -
Norway's Independance
1814 - Norway was in a union with the Kingdom of Denmark subject to a naval blockade being ceded to the king of Sweden. In May a constitutional convention declared Norway an independent kingdom. By the end of the year the Norwegian parliament had agreed to join with Sweden in a personal union under the Swedish king. -

World War II in Norway
In World War II, Norway was invaded by the Germans on April 9, 1940. It resisted for two months before the Nazis took complete control. King Haakon and his government fled to London, where they established a government-in-exile. Maj. Vidkun Quisling, who served as Norway's prime minister during the war, was the most notorious of the Nazi collaborators. He was executed by the Norwegians on Oct. 24, 1945. economy expanded. -
