Syntactic Structures
Chomsky published his first book, Syntactic Structures. Within this book he introduced the idea of transformational generative grammar and tried to construct a formalized theory of linguistic structure. The theories helped develop the science of language and made improvements in simplicity and formal elegance in the theories. Some of these theories, such as phrase-structure components, transformational components, and deep structures were replaced with simpler systems. -
Cognitive Revolution
Chomsky is an American theoretical linguist whose work changed the face of the field of linguistics. His works in linguistics and other related fields, such as cognitive psychology and philosophy of mind and language, helped to create and sustain what is now known as the “cognitive revolution.” Cognitive revolution is a paradigm shift in human sciences that created a new cognitivistic framework in the study of language and mind. -
Aspects of the Theory of Syntax
Another one of Chomsky’s groundbreaking books was Aspects of the Theory of Syntax. This book builds the foundation for a newer cognitivist approach to linguistics. This became comparable to physical sciences from a philosophical perspective. Directing research away from behaviorism, constructivism, empiricism, and structuralism. He then took it and redirected it towards mentalism, nativism, rationalism, and generativism. -
Cartesian Linguistics
Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought, traces the linguistic theory development from Descartes to Wilhelm von Humboldt, during the period of the Enlightenment up to Romanticism. The purpose of the book was to deepen the understanding of the nature of language and mental processes and structures. He also wanted to expose the underlying structures of the human language and whether or not someone could infer the nature of an organism from the language. -
