Linguistics and Social Science
Noam Chomsky, who wrote Syntactic Structures in in 1957, is considered the founder of modern linguistics. "Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and its focus is the systematic investigation of the properties of particular languages as well as the characteristics of language in general." Political Activist
Political science is a branch of social science. Noam Chomsky got into politics in the mid 60's to stand up against the wrongdoings in Vietnam. Chomsky was aware of the Mertonian norms coined in 1942 and I believe Chomsky worked toward the same reward system that motivated science to make the world a better place for all... not just the rich and powerful. He was a force that wanted to let the American people know the evils of geopolitics so that we could work toward a more unified system. -
Universal Grammer
Scientific communication plays a vital part in scientific advances. Without communication there'd be no social science.
"Applications of his work can be found in everyday life. He formulated the algorithm "context-free grammar," which is part of most computer programming languages, as well as programs that appear to understand language, such as Siri. How the World Works
Social criticism is influenced by social science. Science is about standing up for facts. Quote from Chomsky on leaders in international politics and opposition to late-stage capitalism below. "How people perceive themselves is nothing that interests me. There are very few that are going to look in the mirror and say: The person I see is a savage monster. Instead, they make up some construction that justifies what they do." [1] Chomsky, N. (2010). How the World Works. Soft Skull Publishing -
