    The Piligrims Journey on the Mayflower
    The Pilgrims had been harrased by England becuase of their religious veiws. They soon decided to leave England and head for the new world. Their jouney did not come easy. One of their ships started sinking, therefore had to turn around and get another ship. They had a long sail over and many hardships along the way. Food and fresh water was limited and many people became sick along the way.

    Pilgrims Arrival in the New World
    After months at sea, the pilgrims are getting tired of being on a ship. They haven't seen any sign of land yet until now. On November 9th 1620 they land at the new world. Just because now they've reached land doesn't mean everything's okay. They still don't have much food and lacking fresh water. Also they don't have shelter yet, meanwhile while a lot of sick, tierd, and impatient passengers await on board.

    Bradford did a great job explaining in detail what him and the rest of the pilgrims had to endure and go through during their voyage to the new world. He also explains how they started settling into the new world. Bradford wrote this two volume novel over a course of years.Many authors today look at Of Plymouth Plantation is a great piece.
  • The Puritins Arrival in the New World

    The Puritans wrote mostly historical/factual documents, poetry, and sermons. The topic of their literature centered on self-refletion, the glorification of God, and sin and redemption. They did not write fiction or drama, which were considered sinful. The puritans style of writing can best be described as plain. They valued clarity of content over a clever style. An ornate or clever style would be a sigh of vanity, which was a sin.

    The Puritans believed in predestination or Calvinism. John Calvins doctrine that god has already decided who will achieve salvation and who will not. The elect or saints who are to be saved cannot take election for granted, however because of that alll devout POuritans searched their sous with great rigor and frequency for signs of grace. The puritans also belived in original sin. And felt that they would accomplish good only through continual hard work and self discipline.

    William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation
    Bradford explains how the Pilgrims were forced to flee to Holland in 1608, the suffering they underwent while there, how they handled living on the new land, and their motivation to sail to the New World. At first, they were to sail in two ships, but one, because of the fear and hardships of sailing abandonned the MayFlower. Bradford explains in great detail of what it was like on the ship, the conditions they had to deal with, and also other hardships they had to endure.

    Edward Taylor had a deeper meaning to this poem. What happens in the poem is that a wasp flys through a spider web and doesnt get stuck, but yet a fly does the same and gets caught. He asks why does the fly have to get caught? While the fly tries to get free of the web the spider stalks it about to swoop in for the kill.

    Upon The burning of our house was written by Anne Bradstreet and published on July 10, 1666. This poem represents how devoted she is to god. Basically during this peom she watches her house burn down along with all of her items inside. As she is watching she is thanking and praising god the whole time because this must be happing for a reason. She keeps her faith in god the whole time and doesnt change.

    Jonathan Edwards published this piece of writing on July 8th 1741.This poem is basically about people who sin and when they die they have to face god himself and know that they sinned and are going to be punished. God is furious at the people who sin he is very enraged and upset and then he punishes his sinners in order to make up for sinning.

    The Royal Proclamation
    King George issued his Royal Proclamation of 1773. Its pourpose was to ease both Natives feas, as well as the costs it took to fight their rebellions. Seen as a peac treaty of sorts the proclamation restricted colonial settlements west of the Appalachian mountains basically halting the wesward expansion of colonists and giving the indians their own reserve.

    The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed.

    Other British and colonial reactions foloowed in the late 1760's, including the Townshend acts. Charles Townshend conceived the idea of an indirect tax to be paid and collected as a customs duty at American ports. The Townshend Acts taxed imported lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea.

    One evening a British soldier was gaurding his post in other words doing his job when a young colonist came up and stated pestering him. The british man minded his own buisness and the boy attracted attention. Soon enough a big group of colonists were surrounding the redcoats throwing snowballs at them and pusing them. The colonists went after a british man and then the britsh troops started firing into the crowd killing 5 people and injurying others.

    England passed a law that all tea being imported into boston was to be taxed heavily. Britian had not been treating the colonists right to begin with. The last thing the colonist want to put up with is the british giving them more harsh punishments for no reason. The colonists did not like this and later on you'll find out how they responded.

    After the tea act was passed colonists were not happy.The Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians and went aboard a British ship and started dumping cases and cases filled with tea into the Boston Harbor. This was a very famous event and was a big move in the revolution. News of the Boston Tea Party spreaded and so did the spirit of resistance.

    The Intolorable Acts
    Parliament acted quickly to punish Bostonians for their destruction of tea. Patliament passed the Intolerable acts but were actually called the coercive acts to deal with its post Tea Party anger and frustration. The dspute had escalated beyond mere taxation. The Intolorable Acts put Massachusetts under the control of a military governor and moved the colonys meetings out of Boston.

    At Saint Johns church Patrick Henry gave a speech on the night of March 23rd 1775. He spoke to the colonists about the British being in control of the colonists. His most famous line give me liberty or give me death meant he'd die for my freedom. This speech was important because it encouraged the colonists to fight back against the british.

    Paul Reveres Ride
    One evening word got out that the British were going to attack Boston and local towns to raid them and to capture Sam Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Paul Revere got word of this and him and William Dawes decided to ride all night to warn the colonists that the British were coming and they had to prepare for it. Paul found out that the British were coming by sea so he hung two lanterns up in the church that warn Dawes that they were coming by sea. His ride was a sucsess.

    Lexington and Concord is know for the start of the Revolutionary war. At Lexington the Minute men and the British stood in groups standing across from one another. Nobody knows who fired but somebody fired off a shot and then both sides started firing into the others crowd. And Concord was the first actual battle of the Revolutionary War.

    The eighteenth century is often shcaracterized as the Age of Reason. Logical reasoning was a major technique used by the writers of this period. Writing offered sound clear arguments in support of the causes. Personal writing also showed the reasoning process. The colonists belived that people are by nature good not evil. The colonists also belived in free will, which is the opposite or predestination.

    American literature dring this time period was mostly political, and it came in the form of pamphlets, speeches, and newspapers. The topics of their literature centered on politics: relations with Great Britain and the nature of government. Americans were still not writing any fiction or drama. The style of writing in most Colonial pieces can best be described as persuasive. Unlike the private soul searching of the puritians much of what was produced by the colonists was punlic writing.

    This document was published on July 4th 1776. This document was written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by the rest of the delegates. This document was basically Exxplaing to the britsh why the colonist want to get out of the british control. This is one of the most famous documents in american history. It is still around today in Washington D.C.

    The Crisis
    Thomas Paine wrote the criis in 1776. This was a time when the american soldiers were feeling down and defeated. They were scarce on food and clothes. It was freezing and they had to endure harsh conditions. Not many of the soldiers wanted to be there. So Thomas Paine wrote the Crisis to motivate them. The Crisis was just a motivational speech to get the soldiers pumped up and ready to fight again. General Washington made every soldier listen to it so they would get the fire back that they need.
