Hitler is made Chancellor of Germany
Hitler begins his climb to power. He appeals to the German population because he finds someone to blame for all that is wrong in Germany. He will blame the Jews. -

Dauchau concentration camp is opened
The first of many concentration camps will be opened. It is here at these camps that the mass extermination of the Jews will begin. It will be followed by Buchenwald where Eliezer and his father will go. There will be many more camps to come. -
Hitler Becomes Fuhrer
German President, Paul von Hindenburg dies and Hitler takes the opportunity to seize power in Germany. He makes himself the absolute leader within hours of Hindenburg's death. He will begin issuing laws that give him full power over everything in Germany. -
Nuemburg Race Laws
These laws took away from the German Jews their rights of citizenship. The Jews became 'subjects' in Germany. Jews will be forbidden to marry outside of their own race. Many different laws were made that would take all of the rights of Jews away. -
Jews are banned from professional occupation
Jews were no longer allowed to be teachers, accountants or dentists. They were also not allowed to have tax reductions and child allowances. -
Kristallnacht
It is known as 'The Night of Broken Glass'. After a young Jew had killed a member of the German embassy in Paris, Hitler and his men used it as an excuse to attack Jews. Jews were tortured for no reason. There business were destroyed and their synagogues were burned. -
Moshe is arrested
Eliezer's friend Moshe is arrested and taken away. No one knows where they have taken him. They do not know if they will ever see him again -
Moshe Returns
Moshe returns to the village. He tells terrible stories of how the Jews are being tortured and killed. The villagers do not believe him. They think that he is 'mad' in the head. -
Beginning of the general deportation of German Jews
Jews would be taken from their homes. They were being sent away. While waiting to leave, their luggage would be searched, their valuables taken and they would have to surrender their personal papers showing all of their personal ownership of what they owned. -
- Mass killings of Jews using Zyklon-B
This is the gas that was used to kill many of the Jews in the camps. It is a poisonous gas that was used to kill thousands of Jews at a time. The gas put into an air locked chamber that the Jews thought were shower, but it was really the gas instead of water. -
The Wiezel's are warned
A police officer warns the Wiezel's that they are in danger. He tells them to leave or they will be taken away. They do not take his advice -
The Wiezel's are arrested
Eliezer and his family are arrested. They are loaded into a crowded cattle car. They are the last group to leave Sighet. They are going to Auschwitz. -
- Family is Separated
When they arrive at Auschwitz the family is separated. Eliezer is sent off with his father. His mother and his three sisters are sent somewhere else. Eliezer will never see them again. -
Sent to a New Camp: Buna
After about a month in Auschwitz, Eliezer and his father are sent to a new camp called Buna. While at this camp Eliezer is whipped and beaten. Some conditions here are worse than Auschwitz, but some are better. -
Sent to Another Camp: Buchenwald
They arrive in Buchenwald and it worse than the other two camps. It is winter, and it is freezing cold. While they are in Buchenwald Eliezer's father becomes very ill. -
Death
Eliezer's father is very ill, and no longer useful to the Germans. One morning when Eliezer woke up, his father was gone. He had been sent to the crematorium while Eliezer was asleep. -
Liberation
Eliezer and what is left of the other Jews are freed by the Americans in Buchenwald. Three days after liberation Eliezer falls ill from poisoning. He will spend two weeks between life and death. He eventually recovers and looks at himself in the mirror for the first time since the Ghetto's. He will never forget the sadness he saw in his own eyes. -
