Niels bohr

Niels Bohr (October 7, 1885-November 18, 1962)

  • Academy of Science in Copenhagen award

    His work solving a scientific problem of surface tension was published in the Transactions of the Royal Society. He won an award from the Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen.
  • Copenhagen University

    Bohr studied under Professor C. Christiansen who was a physicist. He earned his Master's degree in 1909 and his Doctor's degree in 1911 in physics.
  • Cambridge, England

    Bohr went to England to begin work with J.J. Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory. He was introduced to Ernest Rutherford whose discovery of the nucleus and creation of the atomic model influenced Bohr to begin studying atoms.
  • Copenhagen University

    Bohr was appointed as Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University in 1916. He was head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics from 1920 until his death in 1962.
  • Nobel Peace Prize

    He received the Nobel Prize in 1922 for his work on the structure of atoms.
  • Fleeing Nazi occupation

    Bohr had to flee Denmark and move to Sweden during Nazi occupation. He then went to England and on to America. He worked on the Manhattan project.
