    Niels Bohr's first years.
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885. Son of Christian Bohr, Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University, and his wife Ellen Adler.
Niels, together with his younger brother Harald, grew up in an atmosphere most favorable to the development of his genius. His father was an eminent physiologist and was largely responsible for awakening his interest in physics while still at school, his mother came from a family distinguished in the field of education.
  • His work.

    His work.
In 1913 Niels Bohr proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom.
Electrons move around a nucleus, but only in prescribed orbits, and If electrons jump to a lower-energy orbit, the difference is sent out as radiation.
In 1916 he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University.
In 1920 he was at the head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics.

    Nobel Prize
The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922 was awarded to Niels Bohr in recognition for his work and for his services in the investigation of the structure of the atom and of the radiation emanating from them.
    Atomic Line Spectra:
Bohr observed that when light was given off from an atom, there only single lines visible.
Bohr proposed that each line represented an electron in a different orbit.

He had more achievements in later years, from 1922 until his death.
Even until today, we can see a lot of accomplishments made possible because of his work.

    His last years and family
During the last few years of his life he had shown interest in the new developments of molecular biology.
His final article, published after his death: “Light and Life revisited”.
Bohr was married to Margrethe Norlund.
Their sons also made distinguished careers: Hans, Erik, Aage and Ernest.
