    Nicolaus was born in Thorn (Torun), Poland. His father was a wealthy merchant but when his father died, Nicolaus was raised by his mother's brother. He was a bishop of the catholic church.

    Copernicus studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Cracow. At the time, the school was famous for it's mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy curriculum.

    Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara
    Copernicus met the famous astronomer Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara and became his disciple and assistant. Copernicus lived with him for three years and began to spread his ideas.

    Education

    After attending Cracow University, he studied liberal arts at Bologna, he studied medicine at Padua University, and law at the University of Ferrara. When he was finished with school he had a doctorate in canon law. During this time, he made his first astronomical observations. He frist became interested in astronomy when he attended the University of Bologna.

    Nicolaus Copernicus wanted a simpler way to explain the Ptolemaic system. The backwards motion of the planets confused other philosphers and so did the variations in planetary speed.

    Nicolaus Copernicus dies. It is said that he held a copy of his finished work while on his deathbed. Copernicus died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
