    Romulus establishes the city of Rome
    753 BC - Romulus establishes the city of Rome. Romulus and Remus were placed in a basket in the Tiber River and washed ashore. They were found by a wolf who took care of them. Eventually, the boys were discovered by a kind shepherd who adopted them as his own sons. When they grew up, they decided to build a city on the Tiber.

    509 BC - The Etruscans ruled Rome until they threw out the last king, a tyrant. Early stages of the Republic was ruled by a few aristocratic families, known as patrictians, Patrician families controlled every aspect of society. Plebeians challenged the patricians for power. Plebeians didn´t fight when Rome needed them when they were invaded.

    Mid-100s BC - Rome had no worries as they had nobody to worry about in the Mediterranean area. Their problem was controlling everyting over the big body of land. Rome needed money to connect all the land together. Roman officials could pay people to vote for them so only rich officials were elected so they could make laws that were not needed.

    264 BC - 146 BC - A series of conflict between Carthage and Rome was known as the Punic Wars. In 264 BC Rome Carthage declared war on each other for the land of Sicily. After the defeat of Carthage, it layed in ruin for nearly a hundred years. The Punic Wars provided Rome with training, the navy, and the wealth to expand to an empire that was known as the greatest ever.

    Julius Caesar becomes the first dictator of Rome
    45 BC - Julius Caesar defeats Pompey in a civil war. He becomes the supreme ruler of Rome. This is the end of the Roman Republic. He hires Sosigenes, an Egyptian astronomer, to work out a new 12 month calendar.

    27 BC - Octavious renames himself, Augustus, which means the first emperor. He is the nephew of Julius Caesar. The Pax Romana (Roman Peace), also known as the Pax Augusta, which he initiated, was a time of peace and would last over 200 years. Following Augustus’ death, power passed to his heir, Tiberius.

    Constantine becomes Emperor
    AD 306 - Rome becomes a Christian empire. Before this, Rome persecuted the Christians. Constantius dies. His son Constantine is the new vice-emperor of Galerius. With his victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge, Constantine became the dominant figure in the empire.

    AD 380 - Theodosius I proclaims Christianity as the sole religion of the Roman Empire. Although Jesus had died, his message had not. Word of his teachings spread to Jewish communities across the empire. This was helped by apostles, such as Paul and by the modern communications of the Roman Empire.

    AD 395 - Rome split into two empires, the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. Each side had a ruler in charge of it. The Roman Empire was split by Theodosius. The Western Roman Empire collapsed, but the Eastern Roman Empire flourished for many years after.

    AD 476 - The last Roman Emperor Romulus Augustus is defeated by the German Goth Odoacer. Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors in the west, was overthrown by the Germanic leader Odoacer, who became the first Barbarian to rule in Rome. This is the start of the Dark Ages in Europe.
