Grant was a very successful president. And he did a creditable job of helping the country recover from the Civil War which he had played a major role in. Grant was sincerely distressed about the benefits of former slaves. His interest in civil rights led him to try to protect freed blacks. Nicholas II's grandfather, Alexander II
In 1881, Nicholas's grandfather Alexander II was assassinated. Nicholas was only 13 at the time. Alexander III ascended the throne soon after and Nicholas was heir apparent. [biography.com] -

The eruption of the volcano at Krakatoa
The eruption of the volcano at Krakatoa in the western Pacific Ocean in August 1883 was very disastrous by any measure. The entire island of Krakatoa was simply blown apart to pieces, and the resulting tsunami killed tens of thousands of people on other islands in the district. The most famous weather event in history. The Great Blizzard of 1888 killed at least 400 people. Experiences during the blizzard articulates the need to place critical telegraph and telephone wires underground. And New York City, in the late 1890s, became genuine about constructing an underground rail system, which would lead to the opening of New York's first extensive subway in 1904. Nicholas's father dies
Nicholas's father Alexander III, died at the age of 49. He passed away from a kidney disease. After his fathers passing, Nicholas admitted that he was not prepared to become czar. [biography.com] -
Marriage
Within a month of his fathers passing, Nicholas II got married. He was married to Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt also named Alexandra. Nicholas had to be married and have children in advance to ascending the throne. [biography.com] -
Children
Nicholas had their first child, Olga in 1895. Olga was their first daughter and in 1897 they had their second daughter named Tatiana. They also had a third daughter named Maria in 1899, followed by a fourth daughter named Anastasia in 1901. [biography.com] -
Becoming Czar
In 1896 Nicholas II had officially became czar of Russia. There was a mobbed public celebration of the coronation near Moscow, Russia. It is said the Nicholas and Alexandra did not make a good first impression on the people pf Russia. [biography.com] -
Otto Von Bismarck dies
Otto Von Bismarck died at the age of 88. He was responsible for the unification of Germany. Bismarck introduced growing reforms—including universal male suffrage and the establishment of the first welfare state. [History.com Staff] -
Nicholas's first son
In 1904, Nicholas finally had a son after having 4 daughters. Now that Nicholas had a son, Alexei, he could a male heir. Although there was excitement about having a son there was also concern because Alexei was diagnosed with hemophilia. [biography.com] -
Stepping down from monarchy
After World War 1, Russia took major losses and ended in poverty and high inflation for Russia. This was blamed on Nicholas because of his poor military decisions. After outrageous riots Nicholas II had no other choice but step down from the monarchy. [biography.com] -
Death
On July 17, 1918 Nicholas II and his family were murdered by the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks were under order of Vladimir Lenin. This ended more then 3 centuries of the Romanov dynasty's. [biography.com]
