The Northern Wars
The Northern Wars occured in the Bay of Island. The duration of the event was from 1845 - 1846. The Northern Wars was the very first 'challenge to the crown' after centuaries of living under it. -
Why?
Hono Heke, Te Ruki Kawiti and Pumuka lead the attack due to their personal opinion of being placed below the crown. They felt that the crown was controlling and unjust compared to their view of signing the treaty. Hono Heke, Te Ruki Kawiti and Pumuka launched an attack at Russell; they protested with war. This was all due to the movement of the capital from the Bay of Islands to Auckland. -
Who was involved?
The war had started with Ngapuhi and government troops at Russell in the Bay of Islands . This involved members of the British troop team to defend Russell, the “attacking” team consisted of Hono Heke, Te Ruki Kawiti and Pumuka. -
Where
The location of the attack is in Kororareka, Russell in the Bay of Islands. This was considered the capital of New Zealand (Aotearoa). The Bay of Islands was only capital for 1 year. -
When?
The duration of the attack lasted for a year, from 1845 - 1846. This is 5 years after the signing of The Treaty of Waitangi. The Bay of Islands was only capital of New Zealand for 1 year meaning that Heke and his teams plan did not lay out as he'd hope -
What happened?
What happened - Hono Heke, Te Ruki Kawiti and Pumuka. Unfortunately there is no exact date for the day/month he launched the attack. I assume that this happened in early March. Heke had destroyed the flagstaff multiple times and Pakeha were evacuated.
