Independence from London & First Form of Police Model
In 1828, New York established a paid, professional police force, adopting the London police model after gaining independence. The police force received its first printed set of rules and regulations in 1845, and full uniforms were established in 1853. -
The Metropolitan Police District
A police insurance fund was formed in 1864 to provide financial security to the families of police officers murdered or injured in the line of duty as a result of the rise in violent crimes in New York during the Civil War.
