  • The Nguyen Dynasty comes into power

    The Nguyen dynasty came into power in Vietnam in 1802, which was the last dynasty in Vietnamese history. The establishment of this dynasty put an end to the the thirty years of peasant civil wars and rebellion. This was also the first time a single Vietnamese monarch government ruled the entire country. The Nguyen dynasty helped build the new capital city.
  • the Britain Parliament declared the slave trade illegal

    In 1807, the Britain Parliament made a historic deceleration, making the slave trade illegal. Britain than began to use its army to hunt and take down slave runners ships and free the former slaves on board. Britain than would settle the former slaves in the British port of Freetown as well as Liberia. The former slaves established Liberia in 1821-1822. Despite this Britain only managed to take down 10 % of slave runner ships and the demand for slaves was still high.
  • Muhammad Ali starts his reforms

    After killing his foes the Mamluk cheifs Muhammad Ali starts on his reforms for Egypt. Muhammad Ali begins to reorganized Agriculture and reclaiming most of the cultivated land for state domain. Because of this the sale for Agriculture goods went up and also established the introduction of high quality cotton.

    In 1813, The British parliament had renewed the charter of the east India country for the next 20 years. They did this to support the learning among native Indians. Most of the money went too traditional schools but they decided instead of the usual learning they should implant English and Science which lead to to Indians getting the European education.
  • Java War

    As the Dutch took over the East India company the Dutch modified the company's control over Java and Java became a bureaucratic state. The Javanese resistance to the Dutch government is what lead to the bloody Java war. Sadly the war just lead to the Dutch abusing there power even more.
  • The Opium War

    The opium war started because of China attempting to stop the illegal trade of Opium. The spread of Opium had lead to many Chinese citizens falling into addiction which causes many issues. Western powers were the main suppliers of this illegal drug. The British began the war by attacking Chinese port cities.
  • Chinese efforts to reduce infant deaths.

    Because poor families had resulted to drowning there infant children because they could not afford to keep them You Zhi created "The society to save babies" Depending on how much they needed it they would get a different amount of rice and money and in some cases the babies would be taken away to orphanages.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Because of China's issue with overpopulation farm sizes shrank, Surplus labor surplus wages, and the killing of female infants as families did not have enough money to raise children and sons were seen as more important. Because of the unfair treatment a rebellion broke out started by Chinese peasants. This turned out to be China's most destructive rebellion which lead to about 20 million people losing there lives.
  • Rise in palm oil exports

    Palm oil is a African product which was often used to make soap. After the decline of the Atlantic slave trade the exports of palm oil went up. Europeans encouraged this and started considering African slave trades a business.
  • The Indian national congress

    In 1855 a group of well educated Indians founded the Indian national congress. This congress party made more opportunity available for Indians as well as expanding the Indian military. This party was much needed as Indians needed someone to advocate for them.
  • Great Mutiny/ Great revolt

    The Great Mutiny/Great revolt of 1857 was an Indian rebellion against the British which has been ruling India at the time. The British had done many things wrong such as the use of a sacred animals fat and an animal deemed filthy as well as high tax rates. Despite the Indian troops efforts this only resulted in Britain ruling India even tighter.
  • Japans becoming an imperial power

    During the Meiji period Japan had now become an imperial power. Japan had taken over Taking over Taiwan and Korea colonies. This lead to them fighting over Korea with China and Russia who wanted Korea to be opened.
  • The Meiji restoration

    The Meiji restoration was the dissolution of Japans feudal government system. The imperial system was restored and took over its place. This happen because many people wanted Japan to be under a good strong ruler.
  • The self strengthening movement.

    After the loss of the Opium war China decided to introduce Western methods and technology in an attempt to strengthen there army as well as bring a better education. This was done to strengthen China as a whole so they could become a more powerful country and be less likely to face another defeat like the Opium was.
  • Indian Civil service

    The Indian Civil service was the bureaucracy that managed the Indian government. To get into this service Indians had to take a test that was only available to take in England. Since many Indians could not go to England to take the test only one of the members was actually Indian. This was s the first time Indians started getting a say in government even if only slightly.
  • The long depression

    In 1873 the long depression raised the tariff barriers which got rid of the free trade system. Britain, the other European empires and the Unites states were faced with excess production they could no longer sell turned to imperialism so they could sell to Asia and African countries but the Asia and African buyers did not have things to trade that were of equal value so they ended up losing money anyways.
  • Industrializing Japan

    The leaders of Meiji restoration wanted Japans military to get stronger so they began to promote industrialization. The government began to pay large sums to attracts foreigners to help with the process of industrialization. Japanese people were also prompted to study engineering and science abroad.
  • The Berlin conference

    The Berlin conference was a meeting attended by all European leaders to make rules for how the European powers could colonize Africa. They also agreed to taking care of the native peoples well being and that they would bring Christianity and civilization.
  • Scramble for Africa

    The scramble for Africa was the invasion and colonization of most of Africa except for Ethiopia and Liberia by European states which included Great Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
  • Rubber becoming popular

    Due to the rubber tire invention made by John Dunlop rubber became an extremely popular and sought after source. King Leopold II would take take advantage of this as country was full of rubber and force villages to mine for rubber to gain economic power.
  • Spain and United States war

    In 1898 a war between the Unites States and Spain emerged in Cuba. This happened because the United States supported the struggles of Cuban and Filipinos against Spain's unfair rule. The Filipinos called by the United States to fight the war declared their independence which The United States ignored which in turn lead to the United States also fighting these Filipino rebels.
  • The United States taking the Philippines

    When the United States took the Philippines from Asia this made the United States an imperialist power in Asia. The United States would then go on to spread western ideas on to the Philippines and even change the language being used in the Philippines.
  • White Mans Burden poem

    In 1899 the the popular poem Rudyard Kipling spread the idea of the white mans burden through a poem he wrote. Kipling wrote this poem after America took over the philipines. His idea of the white mans burden was the idea that Europeans should civilize people from the places they were colonizing and that it would be good for the native people.
  • Heart of darkness

    The heart of darkness relates to the historical context of which it was published as its a story about voyage by Europeans up to to Congo rivers and the horrors that came with this.
  • Russo-Japanese war

    As Japanese became an imperial power Japan fought with Russia over east Asian expansion which lead to a war. Japan ended up winning this war making Japan the first Asian power to defeat a European power. Japan also got to expand itself into east Asia territories.
  • The 1911 revolution

    As Chinese began taking there studies abroad to learn from western ideas. One of these people being Sun Yatsen who would go on to start the 1911 revolution. The 1911 revolution brought down the Monarchy system in China and replaced it with the Republic.
