Mowat goes to a tundra to research about wolves. He researches if the wolves are the cause of the decreasing caribou population.

Mowat thinks he sees a dog and starts to go toward it. He finds out it was a wolf and comes face to face with it.

Mowat follows the wolf before and finds the wolf's family. the wolf has a mate and pups.

Mowat later on meets Ootek. Ootek comes from a tribe and can speak to wolves.

Thanks to Ootek they find out where the caribou would be. They then see how the caribou and the wolves respond to eachother.

A trader tells Mowat that he found a load of caribou killed and tells Mowat it was wolves. When Mowat comes to see it all the caribou were shot not killed by wolves.
