    World War One was started by rising tensions, and the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. There was terrible bloodshed, and weapons made, such as the American's favorite, the shotgun.

    Race riots of Omaha
    These riots followed WWI, because of the high influx of Southern blacks. The KKK was very active in the Omaha area, and contributed to a large part of the riots. Three people were killed.

    The Great Depression

    The Great Depression was a bad time to be alive. Towards the end of the 1920's, the stock market crashed, and the economy became poor. Farmers' crops had boomed during WWI, but when they didn't need as many, the growing conditions became poor, and they couldn't grow as much, causing an economic depression.

    The Dust Bowl was during the Great Depression, and it was caused because of homesteading on the plains. The settlers had removed grass from the plains, so bad wind and poor growing conditions kicked up dust into huge clouds that buried possessions, and killed people.

    Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska was the headquarters of SAC for over forty years. The U.S needed it to defend from possible Russian nukes.

    The Interstate highway system opened up a lot of towns to business, and some of them boomed. But, towns not along the Interstate, failed to grow, and some actually shrank.

    UNL students protest the Vietnam draft
    The UNL students who protested the draft, could be drafted without having any say whatsoever at all in the elections. At the time, the legal voting age was 21, but was then lowered down to 18 in order to let the people who would be prime draftees have a say.
