Navagation Acts
Purpose- Directed the trade between England and the colonies. It also prevented the colonists from sending certain products. Outcome- The colonists resented these restrictions. The colonists also ignored these laws and began smuggling with other nations. -
Proclamation of 1763
Purpose- It set the Appalachain Mountains as the temporary Western boundary for the colonies. Outcome- It angered those who owned shares in land companies. They were furious that Britain ignored their land claims. -
Sugar Act
Purpose- Lowered taxes on imported molasses. It also convinced the colonists to pay taxes and to stop smuggling. Outcome- This angered the colonists and they believed the Bitish violated their rights as English citizens. -
Stamp Act
Purpose- It placed a tax on almost all printed material. All printed material had to have a stamp. British officials applied the stamp after the tax was paid. Outcome- Everyone opposed to this act, and it angered everyone. Parliament interfered in the colonial affairs by taxing the colonies directly. In addition, it taxed the colonists without their consent. -
Declaratory Act
Purpose- It stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the British colonies "In all cases". Outcome- The colonists were angry and they began to boycott the british taxes. -
Townshend Act
Purpose- These taxes would apply only to imported goods such as glass, tea, and paper. Outcome- Any British taxes angered the colonists. They believed only their own representatives could tax them. The colonists organized another boycott. -
Tea Act
Purpose- It allowed the company sole control of tea trade in America. It also let the company sell tea directly to shopkeepers and bypass colonial merchants who normally disributed the tea. Outcome- They called for a new boycott. The colonists vowed to stop the East India Company's ships from unloading. The Daughters of Liberty issued a pamphlet, that instaed of saying we'll part with our freedom, it said 'We'll part with our tea'. -
Coercive Acts
Purpose- They intended to punish the people of Massachusetts for their resistance to British law. It also closed Boston Harbor until the Massachusetts colonists paid for the ruined tea. Outcome- Other colonies sent food and clothing to help support Boston. The colonists believed this act took away their English rights as citizens. They wanted no quartering troops and no standing army in peacetime. -
Quebec Act
Purpose- It set up a government for Quebec. It also gave Quebec the area West of the appalachains and North of the Ohio River. Outcome- The colonists claims to the area were ignored. The colonists named the new laws the 'Intolerable Acts'.
