Native Groups
There were two main groups of the Natives, the Algonquins and the Iroquois. -

Algonquin System
The Algonquin political system was a patriarchal society meaning the man is the head of the family. The man will direct and lead the group. -

Algonquin Population
They lived in tipi tents and they were nomadic. Because they were nomadic, they were moving around a lot therefore there were only about 15 to 20 people in each group. -

Iroquois System
The Iroquois system was a matriarchal system meaning the family heirs and the power is passed from mother to daughter. The chief is a women and she chooses the one she thinks will be a good leader in defending their group. -

Iroquois Population
They inhabited the Quebec region and and they were living in long houses but every 10 to 15 years they moved so they were semi-nomadic. There were about 100 people in each group. -

Native Economy
Natives were trading between the different groups. They were trading their goods that the different gropus produced and collected. -

Jacques Cartier has the first contact with the Amerindians. -

Amerindian population after arrival of Europeans
Because f the arrival of the Europeans, the population of the Amerindians increased rapidly. This is because the Europeans killed them and because of new sicknesses that they were not immune to. -
Native-European Trading
Once the Europeans arrive in North America, they begin to trade with the Amerindians, trading their weapons for beaver pelts.
