Residential Schools
: In 1880 the Indian residential school system became prominent. Children were taken from their homes and forced to attend these schools. Living conditions were often unbearable, and mortality rates at some residential schools in Western Canada ranged from 30% to 60% over five years. These schools would not allow students to speak their ancestral languages, would not allow them to practice cultural and religious rituals and were often thought of as attempts of forced assimilation. -

Jean Chretien: White Paper
In spite of all government attempts to convince Indians to accept the white paper, their efforts will fail, because Indians understand that the path outlined by the Department of Indian Affairs through its mouthpiece, the Honourable Mr. Chrétien, leads directly to cultural genocide. We will not walk this path.
