First Treaties
Have you ever heard of the first treaties between the colonists & the Native Americans? The first treaties between the colonists & the Native Americans were in 1621 Massachusetts, when it was signed. There were other peace talks with Captain Smith in Virginia, but these were agreements or contracts or rule by law to be fair with Indian lands. It was signed because the Playmouth Pilgriams wanted peace with the Wampanoag nation. The peace talks won't last. Settlers keep moving West. Wars start up -
American Revolution
George Washington & Patriots forced Iroquois to join against the Britain, in between 1775 & 1783, in America. This war was important because when the Iroquois didnt join the American Revolution for either side, then they were forced to move out & their land sold. This was pretty bad because if they were foced to move out. That's wrong. -
The Sioux Meet the Lewis & Clark Expedition
The Sioux Meet the Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1804. Lewis & Clark Expedition was announced by President Jackson in order to explorer the Lousiana purchase so they can rule the Native American without fighting them. They explored the new land. This is important to us now because its important for us to learn what happened through out the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and the promises of peace and trade they made that we should remember today. -
Taking Gold: Trail of Tears
More than 1/3 of the Cherkokee were killed when they were forced to move from Georgia to Oklahoma.
The U.S. people wanted the gold found on the land in GA.
Pres. Jackson was illegal because the Supreme Court said this was wrong and against the Constitution to take their property rights away. -
Buffalo Herds
Around the 1870's, buffalo herds were hunted by whitess in order for the Natives to change places and move to give their land away.. They wanted the gold and rich fertile land, This was important because they used this to make America bigger. Hunting buffalos were important to us now because that's how the plains Indians stayed alive. They needed the fur & sometimes they just had to eat these poor animals. Whites just hunted for sport and to chase away Indians. Now they're endangered species. -
Native American/U.S. Wars
In Little Bighorn River, Montana.Custer, The Sioux Plain Indians, Sitting Bull, and Americans fought in the Battle of Bighorn. "Atrocities were on both sides," (Deverell 43) Natives beat the U.S.. General Custer died. But then the fedaral goverment spent 2 years tracking down Lakota and won. They had to live on reservations. The U.S. broke treaties to get the gold in their land in South Dakota. This is important because Indians lost land and were told to become farmers.
