  • Citizenship

    Citizenship
    After Native Americans had fought with America through multiple wars the Native Americans were finally classified as citizens and granted the right to vote. In some states Native Americans were barred from voting until 1957. This was because voting rights were governed by state law.
  • Indian Reorganization Act

    Indian Reorganization Act
    The Federal Government passed the Indian Reorganization Act in an attempt to restore to Native Americans their land and resources. This legislation also restored self-government on tribal lands. This land was mostly in the Dakotas.
  • National Conference of American Indians

    National Conference of American Indians
    Founded in Denver, Colorado, the NCAI serves to monitor federal policies for American Indians. The NCAI was formed to ensure a better future for Native Americans by working with the federal government.
  • National Indian Youth Council

    National Indian Youth Council
    During the 1960's Native American youth across the country began to rise up. The organization instilled a sense of national pride among young Native Americans and gave them a voice. It was formed in Gallup, New Mexico. It was formed becasue young Native Americans felt they didn't have a say in their government.
  • American Indian Movement

    American Indian Movement
    Formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the American Indian Movement was formed by urban indians who believed direct violent action was necessary to achieve Native American rights. It was formed due to a lack of promised civil rights.
  • National Indian Education Association

    National Indian Education Association
    A Native American teacher, in Bartlesville Oklahoma, formed a conference for Native American educators of all types to collaborate and learn from eachother. Today this organization works to improve education for all Native Americans. The organization was initially formed in response to inadequate education for Native Americans.
