  • Dawes Act

    Dawes Act
    President Grover from Cleveland signs the Dawes Severalty Act into law in 1887. The act split up reservations held communally by Native American tribes into smaller units and distributed these units to individuals within the tribe. This act reduced Native American land from 138 million acres in 1887 to 78 million by 1900, as land continued to decrease as the white settlement and continued where Native American settlements had been. http://badantweb.com/gronich/Dawes.3.gif

    Indian Reorganization Act

  • Congress adopts the termination policy

    Congress adopts the termination policy
    In 1953 the United States put together a survey of the Indian living conditions. They found the living conditions on the Native American reserves to be terrible for them. Because of this tragic time for the Native Americans the United States finally took things into account for them and call this project the termination project. The government believed that this would help the many struggles that native Americans were facing.

    American Indian Movement
    In July 1968 the Native American advocacy group was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This group's main purposes was to publicly show the harshness of how the Native Americans were being treated. Native American people were forced to move away from their reservations.   • Occupation of Alcatraz Began

    Occupation of Alcatraz Began
    The Occupation of Alcatraz was an occupation of Alcatraz Island by Indians of All Tribes. It lasted for nineteen months, starting in 1969 and ending in 1971, until it was put to an end by the United States government. The Native Americans took over and held Alcatraz Island as Indian land.   • Indian Education Act

    Indian Education Act
    The Indian Education Act worked to meet the educational needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students. It was passed by Congress and provided additional funding for public schools with Indian students. This act, passed in 1972, created new educational opportunities for Indian children and their elders. A National Advisory Council was also created.
