Navajo and Apache Wars
While many American soldiers were being called away to the civil war Native American band were raiding and wreaking havock. The U.S. soon returned to kill over 650 and capture 9,000. A U.S. general had wanted the land for farming and had sparked a war. -
Sand Creek Massacre
Native Americans of the cheyenne and Arapaho tribe were encamped. Soldiers of the Colarodo militia attacked the camp and killed and estimated 200 natives most of which were women and children. The Native Americans assumed they were going to surrender to the army peacefully -

"A Century of Dishonor"--Helen Hunt Jackson
A non fiction book describing many of the injustices done to Native Americans. Jackson sent a copy of her book to every member in congress. Jackson was one of the first advocates about NAtive American cruelty. -
Dawes Severalty Act
Allowed the president to survey Indian tribal lands and then distribute that land to indivdual Indians and tribes. The goal was to stimulate the assimilation of non hostile tribes. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
Native Americans were performing the Ghost Dance. U.S. Army sent in to arrest them. At least 150 sioux are killed including their leader Sitting Bull who had seen his death 5 years before.
