Description: Chief Menominee of the Potawatomi refused to sell land and move west of the Mississippi River, and did not sign the treaty of 1836, but was still forced to do so. Indian Agent for northern Indiana, Abel C. Pepper appointed General John Tipton to e in charge of the removal. Chief Menominee and two other chiefs were placed into a horse-drawn jail wagon and transported across IN., while the people walked or rode horse back behind them.
