The Cherokee tribe was forced to give up its land east of the Mississippi River as part of Jacksons Indian Removal Policy. Over 4,000 of the 15,000 died on the journey. -

In 1830, the Indian Removal Acts were passed in order to remove the overpopulated East tribes to the unpopulated land west of the Mississippi River. Approximately 860 members of the Potawatomi tribe moved from the area of Plymouth, to the area of present day Kansas.
