    The discovery of gold affected the settlement of the West by bringing over miners towards the West. The attraction of gold brought 10s or 1000s of miners
  • 1864-Sand Creek Massacre

    What happened at Sand Creek?
    In Sand Creek most of the Cheyenne thought were under the protection of the U.S government however General S.R. Curtis sent a telegram to the militia stating they wanted the Indians to suffer causing a huge a massacre killing over 150 inhabitants mostly women and children .
  • 1868-Treaty of Fort Laramie

    What were the terms of the treaty? Why did it fail?
    The terms of the treaty were that Sioux agreed to live on a reservation along the Missouri River expecting to continue to use traditional hunting grounds. The reason why the treaty failed was because the two cultures conflicted against each other causing major disagreements against the treaty.
  • 1874-Invasion, by gold miners, of the Sioux’s Sacred Black Hills

    Where are the Black Hills? Who was Sitting Bull?
    The Black Hills was place were Colonel George A. Custer claimed to find gold. Sitting Bull was man who was a warrior, spiritual leader, a medicine man and he was determined that white settlers should leave Sioux territory.
  • 1876-Custer’s Last Stand

    What happened at the Battle of Little Bighorn?
    In the Battle of Little Bighorn the Sioux and Cheyenne were ready for battle from a vision from Sitting Bull and later went against Colonel Custer and his troops. Later on Sitting Bull and his warriors were beaten taking refuge at Canada and soon forced to surrender.
  • 1887-The Dawes Act

    The Dawes Act was the act to Americanize Native Americans. The Dawes Act sell the remains of the reservations to settlers. To Americanize the native Americans they would have to give their beliefs in a way of life to become part of the white culture. As a group we believe that assimilation is bad because we deserve to at least keep apart of our culture of who we are as a person.
  • 1890-The Ghost Dance Movement and the Battle of Wounded Knee

    What was the Ghost Dance Movement and what happened at Wounded Knee Creek?
    The Ghost Dance Movement was ritual that was believed to restore Native American lands and their way of life. At wounded Knee Creek, The Seventh Calvary (Custer's old regiment) gathered the remaining 350 starving/freezing Sioux making them weaponless slaughtering them the next day killing over 300 unarmed Native Americans including their several children.
