Austria-Hungary Nationalism
LinkLinkAustria and Hungary established the Dual Monarchy in 1867. This monarchy ruled over a large range of nationalities bust stated that only Austrians and Hungarians could rule. This was put in place to suppress the other nationalities and to gain control over the Balkan Peninsula. Meanwhile Serbia was trying to create their nationalist movement in the Balkans. Due to this Austria-Hungary resented Serbia. -
Russian Nationalism

Russia was the biggest power both in land and population. They still wanted to extend into the Balkans as well in order to have control of the Mediterranean bordering land. However Russia had signed the Treaty of Paris saying that they couldn’t expand there but broke that treaty in 1870 and started another push for the Balkan land. This clashed with Austria-Hungary’s pursuits and created conflict between the two. -
Italian Nationalism
Link Italy was unified in 1870, however they were very weak and corrupt. This made them push for lands in Africa that France also wanted. This created some of the territories to be under the Dual Monarchy (under Austria-Hungary rule), and drug Italy into conflict with Austria-Hungary. -
German Nationalism
VideoLinkGermany was united in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian war, (one of the events leading up to WWI). Germany expanded rapidly economically and in military power as well to become dominate in Europe. Germany still wanted to expand and had a very conflict heavy stance to expand their nation, they did make alliances to help with that, however Germany was in conflict with other nations a lot. -
France Nationalism
In 1871, France was the defeated by Germany. France lost 2 great provinces (Alsace & Lorraine) and also had to pay great amounts of money for the loss of the 2 provinces. -

A Group of Alliances gave European powers
a sense of security before World War 1.They formed these alliances with eachother for protection and to guarente that other members of the alliance would come to the country's aid if attacked. Although alliances provided protection, the system also created certian dangers. If war came, the alliance system meant that a number of nations would fight, not only the two involved in a duspute. -
Britian Nationalism
In 1870 Britain was the most industrially advanced country in Europe. She also possessed the largest overseas empire and the largest navy in the world. She did not want to trouble herself with the continental affairs of Europe. Her main concern was to preserve her overseas empire and her overseas trade by maintaining a large navy. Archduke Assassinated!
Beginning of the War On June 28, 1914 Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist named Gavrilo Princip. The Archduke's assassination triggered the outbreak of World War 1. On July 28 Austria declard war on Serbia. Because of Austria's alliance with Germany, Serbia try to get help from Russia. -

Germany was extremely proud of the military power that they had become after the Franco-Prussian War. As a new unified nation after January of 1871, the Germans felt nearly unstoppable as a world power.
