Missouri Compromise
In 1820 the Missouri Comprimise was passed. This resulted in Missouri to become a slave state and Louisiana and Maine to become free states. -
The Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso was introduced by a man named David Willmont, who was a Pennsylvania Representative. It was made so that Mexico would remain free. -
Free Soil Party
Members of the Free Soil Party strongly disagreed with slavery spreading to western territories. -
The Compromise
Five laws were proposed before The Compromise was passed. These laws included the end slavery in D.C. and California coming into the union as a free state. -
The Fugitive Slave Act
This Act allowed people to be able to take African-Americans form the North, and make them slaves. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This law was origanally proposed to support the construction of the Mid-eastern Transcontinental Railroad. Many came in to the the territory so that they could vote illegally. This caused riots and murders which split the people of America into two groups, Anti-Slavery and Pro-Slavery. -
The Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was born into slavery and worked for a man named Dr. John Emerson. Scott married. Soon Dr. Emerson died and his wife made Scott and his wife work for her. He tried to buy his freedom but she refused. He went to court and became free along with his family. Later Scott was found and taken as a slave. He once again went to court for his freedom and because he could not sue in courts because of his color and that the judges agreed with slavery he, and his family, became slaves again. -
Lincoln vs. Douglas
The debate between Lincoln and Douglas was mainly about slavery. Lincoln was anti-slavery and Dougles was pro-slavery. Douglas won the debate even though he was agaist the supreme court. -
Harpers Ferry
In attempt to start a slave rebellion, John Brown attacked on Harpers Ferry, killing seven and injuring ten or more. His original plan was to give the African-Americans weapons yet he ended up killing one, got most of his men killed, and he was hung as well. His plan failed, dramatically. -
Lincoln's Election
Lincoln competed in a four way election. Douglas and Lincoln competed in the north and Breckinridge and Bell competed in the South. Lincoln won in the North.
