Treaty No. 1 - Signed in Lower Fort Garry, Manitoba.
Treaty One was the first of several numbered treaties signed between the Crown and Canada's Indigenous peoples. This treaty was signed between the Ojibwa, the Crown (Britain) and Swampy Cree Nations, which entailed the ceding of massive hunting grounds in exchange for peaceful trade and cohabitation between First Nations people and settlers. It remains a controversial topic today due to different understandings of what the treaty entailed between Canadian officials and FNMI representatives.
