Past perfect
When we talk about something that happened in the past we sometimes want to refer back to something that happened before that time. We can use the past perfect tense (had + past participle) to do this. -
Simple past
The simple past (also called past simple, past indefinite or preterite) is a verb tense which is used to show that a completed action took place at a specific time in the past. The simple past is also frequently used to talk about past habits and generalizations. -
Past continuous
The past continuous is formed from the past tense of be with the -ing form of the verb.
We use the past continuous to talk about the past: for something which continued before and after another action.
Example: The children were doing their homework when I got home.
